Child Jésu

Child Jésu

Child Jésu is a choral piece for SATB + piano. Alfred wrote the piece in New York City in November of 1966. He dedicated the work to Miss Hilda Deighton, a friend of his whom he met in Germany while working on eurythmy and anthroposophy. Miss Deighton led rehearsals for what was presumably a premiere of the piece in December of that year in Switzerland; in one particular letter, she writes: “May every song you write meet with such approval and interest as did Child Jésu…” In the same letter, she mentions that the ensemble will then perform it every Christmas. This work is set to the text from Danish author Hans Christian Anderson’s Christmas carol, “Child Jesus comes from heavenly height.”
