A single-instance (one of a kind) artist's book in two accordion-format volumes. No text. All leaves are filled with abstract illustrations in black and shades of blue, incorporating curved lines, dots and figures suggesting calligraphy, with controlled spatters of blue. For covers, each accordion-folded sheet is attached at each end to a bifolio of heavier paper. The letters "X S" are lightly written in pencil on the front cover of the 28-page volume, and the letters "X R" on the front cover of the 24-page volume, suggesting that the 28-page volume is to be seen as "sublime" and the other as "ridiculous." The volumes are covered in jackets of blue suede, also marked "S" or "R." Both volumes are laid in a 4-sided Japanese cloth cover wrap with twin bone clasp closures.

"The inspiration for Sublime and Ridiculous was Japanese. I made two matching accordion blank books out of recycled, aged newsprint paper. My textile friend indigo dyed a piece of suede for me as a gift. It was so beautiful I waited to find materials worthy of it. Hence beautiful cover, sublime and old newsprint pages. The drawing in both books was done simultaneously in sumi, ashes, indigo gouache, watercolor, and chalk. One is more beautiful than the other, but it is hard to tell which is sublime and hence which other is ridiculous. Isn't it always the way? The wrap around Japanese case is the first one of these I have made"--Artist's statement from Vamp & Tramp Booksellers website, viewed Feb. 14, 2014.
