Saint Jerome in the Desert

Attributed to Domenico Anderson, this black and white photograph is representative of much of the Contini-Volterra Photographic Archive. The work depicts a religious scene with Saint Jerome shown in penance kneeling before a crucifixion-- a common theme of the Italian Renaissance. In the background, a skull and hourglass are visible symbolizing the mortality of man. The painting, dated c.1552, is the work of Titian and housed in the Pinacotecca di Brera in Milan, Italy.
