A one-of-a-kind artist's book and sculptural work. Includes a piece of treated and stained maple wood (46 x 10 cm) with two square cut-outs (3.5 x 5 cm) side by side at the center. A collection of cut strips from a pre-used Bible are laced into one of the openings and through the other, wrapped tightly and held in the wood.
One copper nail is at each of the outer corners of the two windows, on both sides of the wood, totaling 8 copper nails in sum, or four on each side of the wood plank. On the reverse side of the wood, a wax-coated string has been tied around each of the copper nails, forming an "X" binding across the "spine" of the pages.
"Board of curly maple with rectangular opening containing pages of folded 1800s text paper. Other materials: linen thread, copper nails"--Vamp and Tramp, Booksellers, LLC website, viewed August 18, 2014.
Artist's statement: "I find books that have mangled spines and covers but good quality paper, and I use that paper in my work. ... One of my favorite things about bookbinders is listening to them justify tearing up old books. I don't have much of a problem with this, because the books I alter are not rare, and they've lived their lives. Book binders have been recycling books for 2,000 years"--Vamp and Tramp, Booksellers, LLC website, viewed August 18, 2014.
