Woulda Coulda Shoulda
Sidelinger, Stephen J., 1947-

A single-instance (one of a kind) artist's book, entirely written and illustrated by hand. Consists of 27 unbound bifolios of Krome Kote paper, laid in a cover of wood boards. Except for seven, each bifolio bears a drawing executed in ink, gouache, colored pencil or pen, and/or graphite on its left interior page, facing a handwritten and decorated text on the the right interior page. One bifolio contains text but lacks an illustration on the left. One bifolio contains only the title page, another a table of contents, and another the colophon. The bifolios at the beginning and end of the book are blank, as is one following the table of contents. The title and the author's surname are handwritten on the front cover in a repetition of the title page design. The whole is housed in a white clamshell box with a label bearing another iteration of the title page design pasted on its top.
"This book was create[d] over the last ten years, 2000-2010, the first decade of the century. The book was started in Venica California and completed when I moved to Venice Florida. In typical Sidelinger fashion the images were made first and the text came from interpretations of the drawing. Following the illuminated book tradition that began my manuscript work, both the image and the text are given equal attention. The subject of the book evolved into things that were or were not done, woulda, things that can be done, coulda, and things that need to be done, shoulda"--Colophon.
