Each drawing is signed "Sidelinger 92," with title
designations "Tantric 1" through "Tantric 8"; this is the only text other than the title on the portfolio cover.
A portfolio of eight original ink and gouache drawings. The drawings are mounted within Krome Kote paper bifolios (36 x 60 cm. folded to 36 x 30 cm.), with protective vellum sheets tipped in. The protective sheets are painted with framing border designs in white, essentially identical for each sheet. The drawings are laid in a simple folder of heavy boards covered in rough white paper, lacking a closure. The front cover of the folder bears the handwritten title within a painted border similar to those on the protective sheets; the back cover of the folder is completely covered by the same design used in the borders. The work is housed in a box made with distressed kraft paper.
"Tantric is of course basic [sic] on the Indian art form of the same name. I was attracted to the vivid, primary colors and the simple geometric, chart like diagrams mixed with odd abstract imagery. The pages were originally drawn in ink on an airplane ride from LA to NYC. The colors were added at a much later date and with direct reference to actual tantric pieces. The binding in folio form with overlapping stamped velum refers to Indian manuscript illuminations which were done in a similar way, lo[o]se in storage boxes.
