Made to accompany a Report on the Improvement of that Stream for the navigation of it by Steam Boats; in obedience to a Resolution of Congress dated April 26, 1834 by Howard Stansbury, U.S. Assist. Civ Eng.; Taken from Matthew Rhea Map of Tennessee and drawn by Randolph Coyle. This early map is quite detailed as to stream and waterway names, towns, roads, and riverine obstructions such as shoals or falls (navigability of the Cumberland River being the chief purpose of the map).
Historical Note A number of important early Tennessee towns that later disappeared, such as Cairo in Sumner County and Jefferson in Rutherford County, appear on this map.
