The Santa Anita Park opened in 1934 and is the oldest racetrack in California. Grantland Rice was introduced to covering the racetrack in 1901 while working for the Nashville News. He spent the rest of his life writing about and enjoying horseracing. Rice even invented a complicated betting strategy he used to pick horses.
