Dr. Kuhlman, director of the Joint University Libraries from 1936 to 1960, was the driving force behind the creation of the Judaica Collection. As a scholar librarian with a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago, he was dedicated to building a quality research library. In the aftermath of the Holocaust, he worked to secure donors to create a center of Jewish learning in the Southeast at Vanderbilt University.
