Virgin and Child with Saints Jerome and Catherine (Vittore Carpaccio)
Creation: 1507
Formerly housed in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin, this painting by Carpaccio depicts the Madonna and Child surrounded by saints Jerome and Catherine. The work represents an effort of the artist to combine two earlier compositions by Bellini. Unfortunately, Carpaccio’s painting was destroyed in 1945 during WWII. Like several photographs in the Contini-Volterra Photographic Archive, this image is a unique record of the painting's existence.
