Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960) published four novels and more than 50 short stories, plays, and essays. She is best known for her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, which she wrote while in Haiti doing fieldwork in anthropology. This novel is considered her masterwork and the height of her literary career. It is the story of Janie Crawford, an African American woman living in Central Florida during the first half of the 20th century.
