The 1972 Summer Olympics was just one of my Olympic Games Fred Russell attended. It was here though that Russell was witness to the massacre of the Israeli athletes. In a split second Russell turned to “hard journalism,” reporting the events as they occurred. He was one of the first to report on the hostage situation and send columns back to Nashville. He reported on the situation and the subsequent resumption of the games and the somber mood that pervaded the last week of the events.
